Location: Compass Atelier 2 (main level)

What makes a great photograph? We'll explore this and other questions in this class. The class is for photographers of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced. All you need is a digital camera or iPhone and a desire to take great pictures. We will be spending much of our time out in the field, photographing outside (weather permitting) and indoors as well, learning how to use the natural light and composition to make interesting, engaging photographs. We will explore how to approach different types of photos – including portraits, landscape, and street photography – which students can apply to their particular subject matters of interest. The class will culminate in a studio session where we will spend 20-30 minutes discussing each student’s work. I will also be available throughout for individual feedback and brainstorming.

Location: Compass Atelier 2 (main level)

In this workshop, the participating artist swill practice drawing the human figure using the Florentine Structural System, a sequential method devised during the renaissance that permits the students to “understand” the human forms from a structural and anatomical point of view, giving them control over the drawing process. Mastering the basic principles of the method, the progress in drawing the human figure becomes faster, and you will be able to create more anatomically accurate and aesthetically pleasing figure drawing.

Each day will start with a demonstration of the duration of about 1 hour, during which I will draw a variety of visualizations of the human figure focusing on structure and proportions.

I will also demonstrate the muscles of neck, ribcage and pelvis in detail. The students will also receive reference material to prepare for the workshop and to keep practicing afterward. The material includes anatomical charts, structural renderings of the figure, examples of figure drawings executed in a variety of techniques and recorded video demonstrations where I show how to layer muscles over a skeletal scaffolding and how to execute drawing techniques.

This workshop is part of a series of workshops structured as a complete course that focuses on the structure, anatomy and aesthetics of the human body and will be followed by future ones where we will gradually explore the other parts of the body: the posterior view of the torso, arms and legs and finally the head, this last topic is a must for artists interested in portraiture. Open to all levels.

Contemporary Still Life Painting • Cindy Procious • Monday - Friday, April 7-11 • 10am-5pm

Instructor: Cindy Procious

Location: Compass Atelier 1 (main level)

Contemporary Still Life Painting is a week-long course focused on realist painting using methods of the Old Masters. It is open to anyone who paints in oil, from beginner to advanced.

Students will learn a layered indirect painting technique, incorporating underpainting, layering and glazing. We will explore a variety of techniques for realistically creating the illusion of different surface textures, as well as how to achieve rich color and depth of form to create a luminous work of art with a high level of finish. We will also learn how to use Photoshop as a tool to create more successful paintings.

Emphasis will be placed on design, composition, and lighting to create a dramatic still life set up.  Working from direct observation, we will cover the basic elements of painting in oil - from the initial drawing on canvas, to color, value, edge control, glazing/scumbling, and final varnishing.

Students will create their own complete narrative scene incorporating food and drink of their choice. Through demonstration and individual instruction in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, students will be guided through the entire process from the first drawing on the canvas to the finishing flourishes.

INSTRUCTOR: ROBERTO OSTI

In this 2-day workshop, students will learn the essential elements of anatomy for artists that can be applied to the practice of figure drawing. The emphasis of this workshop will be on the aesthetic and dynamic aspects of the human figure. Starting from the structural, layered method developed during the Renaissance and moving on to the expressive aspects of the human figure at rest and in movement, the students will learn to “read” and recognize the body’s structural and anatomical characteristics, allowing the artist to employ an “active” interpretation of the human figure rather than a mimetic or passive one. Each class will begin with a 1-hour lecture followed by a 5-hour figure drawing session with live models, alternating male and female models each day.
