JOURNALING YOUR WAY TO AN ARTIST STATEMENT • LANA PORTOLANO • WEDNESDAYS, OCTOBER 16-30 • 6-8:30PM

  • Compass Art Center 10335 Kensington Parkway Kensington, MD, 20895 United States (map)

INSTRUCTOR: LANA PORTOLANO

Learn to use journaling as a wayfinding tool in this no-fear writing workshop for artists. Join local artist and professor emeritus of English (Towson University) as she leads students through a series of writing prompts designed to help artists think about their own practice and the unique character of their evolving work. Students will learn the parts of an artist statement, both long-form and the essential “elevator pitch,” and how to leverage poetic language and rhetorical tropes for the perfect one-line summary or webpage pull quote. From these explorations, students will produce a revisable artist statement suitable for personal or professional use. Recommended for artists with a developing body of work.
